Finally got my truck timed!

Hey guys, I finally just got my very own Ferret V765-01 pulse adapter.

Hooked up the timing light, I'm all stoked, and then I realize there are no marks on the balancer! That blows.
SOOOOOOO... I went to Harbor Freight and got me a timing light with a dial for timing advance.

Got back, hooked it up and WOW. It was literally at TDC. 9* Retarded!
After moving the pump a little bit and getting little change, I popped it over close to 1/4" and nailed it right at 9* BTDC. Sweet!

Odd thing is, it doesn't sound any different at idle, or 2000 RPM. So I hope it performs better cause my mileage is crap and seems slower than it was last year.

Anyway that's my late-week excitement. I'll update with MPGs and power response.

Currently I am averaging 13.5mpg, driving the same as I did in December and I was getting 15! Summertime about 16.

Just wanted to thank all of you FTE's that took the time to post first of all what equipment to buy, about how it's done, procedures and tips, etc. It's not hard, but knowing how to do it with confidence is priceless.

Well when the engine was hot it sounded the same, old timing or new timing, under no load.
However, now that I have driven 160 miles, I can tell you-- it sounds a LOT different! Mostly under load and especially when cold. Definately sounds like a diesel now...

do you have a part number and model of the timing light?
Xenon Timing Light with Advance
Part number 40963

I am not a member of oil burners so I can't see the pictures.

Basically follow the directions on the ferret. It times exactly like a gasser, but instead of turning the distributor, you turn the IP(with the truck OFF).

The thing for me was there is one mark on the balancer, and the TDC mark on the engine. So for ease of use and best results, we must use a timing light that allows us to dial in our 9* of timing advance(which means the light does the math, all we have to do is line the balancer to the TDC mark). Just move the IP towards the passenger side to advance the timing. They say that 1mm of IP movement equals about 1.5* of timing.

It's cool with that timing light too, because you can set 9*, then measure, and while the truck is running dial it in to the TDC mark to see how many degrees you are off. Not necessary, but fun. In my case, I was 9* off.

Oh and BTW, I was so far off that I double-checked with my #4 cylinder to make sure it wasn't just a faulty injector. But were both @ 9* retarded, which is actually TDC, or 0*.

so what you saying is,good luck to those who try and time by ear hey Joshua?
i wouldn't want to try it either.i can't tell 4 degree's at least one way or the other.
about all i can tell by ear,is when it's clearly too advanced.it sounds miserable.too much retarded and it just sounds like a gas job, with you wondering if its a diesel or not.in between there,im just lost without the meter in hand really.

Well I went ahead and ordered one. I know of at least one other truck I can time with it, plus a whole yard full of farm equipment, although I'm sure the smaller engines on skid steers and stuff use metric lines but it should work on the bigger cummins and IH units.

You can get different size piezo clamps to work with the Ferret adapter to use the adapter on multiple vehicles. For our IDI trucks you need 1/4 inch.

Yeah pretty much! If I'd had a reference point(like another truck that was properly timed) it would have been EASY to tell that I was way out of line. But I've never had my truck timed properly, and dont know anyone with this engine locally either. But even still it's not +-1* easy.

Yup! BTW when you order it's for 1/4" but when it comes it's marked 6.32mm or something similar. I thought I got screwed but it hooks up perfectly.
