Wiper Parking

Have a problem with my wipers on my 82 F100 not parking.

When I bought the truck in January the wipers were not working at all so I replace both the switch and the motor. Wipers work fine now but will not park. Have to time it just right.

My knowledge on this is that the parking function takes place within the motor itself. If this is correct, then did I just get a bad motor on this new one?

"Most probably the motor" would be my guess, but you can run some tests to verify that as described HERE in the EVTM.

Either the motor, the switch or wiring between the two. That EVTM will help diagnose which.

Had the same issue about six months ago. Corroded connector at motor. Cleaned and white lithium grease applied, no more problem there.

Your problem may differ.

gotta chech that wiring out. I had no idea that there was a wire dedicated just for this purpose and I suspect it may be that.

When I bought the truck the wipers worked on and off, had something loose in the motor, but would never park. Then they finally stopped working all together so I replaced the motor yet still won't park.

So I suppose it's possible that the switch in the motor was bad in both old and new motors...but more likely, at least I hope, to be in the wiring. Switch is new too.

Make sure you have the wiper blades installed, and you are not "testing it out" with just the spindles sticking up.

The motor is fed 12v all the time the key is in run. So when you kill the power to the motor from the wiper dash switch, the 12v direct wire keeps the motor running till a cam switch inside the motor breaks the connection. But what can happen is the motor can "coast through" the no power cam area, and then pick up the power again. So you need to make sure the wipers are on the windshield to create enough drag so the motor will not coast over the cam.

Ah....sounds like some real life experience there Something we wouldn't think about until it happens to you right?

Heading to church but the first thing I want to check out is that I'm still getting power to the motor when turned off so that the "park" curcuit is still getting power. The way I see it from the diagragm...that Red wire should have 12V all the time even when the swithc is in off...allowing the switch in the motor to control, switch, the curcuit.

My hunch is I don't...as soon as I turn the switch off, they stop where ever they are.

Well wasn't too easy to find...but was an easy fix!!!

Chris...could not have done it without your diagragms you posted...thank you very much.

Turned the ignition on and put the wipers in the middle, somewhere I knew the parking curcuit should be working.

Had 12V on the red wire going to the motor as well as on the Black and pink going back to the switch. Also had 12V at the Black and Pink at the switch where in the "off" position it should be feeding power back to the "low" contactor on the switch.

So at that point I thought it must be the switch not making the connection. I think noticed that the bundle of wires going to the switch were all taped up except that black and pink wire...I knew somebody must have been messing with it.

Again...thanks to Chris's diagragm of the back of the switch that shows where all the wires should be landed...I noticed that little bugger was not in the right place. For whatever reason it was put into a blank hole in the connector. There are spots for 6 wires but I only have 5...the other is probably for intermittant wipers.

Swapped the wire, turned the key on and those blades went right back to where they were supposed to be and stopped.

Small successes can be very rewarding!!!

Thanks to all of you that helped figure this little thorn in my side out!!!
