Once I fix a few things on my 84, I'll be driving that to work. Maybe not every day, but drive it just the same. The older trucks have more style than todays vehicles, in my opinion. Most newer ones look too cookie cutter.
I plan to do the same, mainly because my 5R55E was abused, and I just can't trust it as far as I can throw it.
I manage to even work on my truck AT work some days . Alot of guys laugh when they see my truck cause of all the colors but then they hear me start it up and then its a little different. I love drivin it round town its just such a blast bouncin down the road .
My truck isn't hoity-toity enough for my employers. I have to park it behind the building where visiting bigwigs won't see it. :P
I'd still park it up front and make it even more noticable!
This happened to me about 7 years ago. The VP of my company came out to his new $$$$$$$$ car and seen me working on my 85 Plymouth Caravelle(the 84 F250 was down with bad axle bearings) at lunch time. Chasing a vacuum leak down. I hate hardline vac hoses.....
He said"Why don't you get a new car....." I replied "well give me a $500 a month raise so I can spend $500 a month on a new car. Other than that, this car is paid off since 1993 and WHY SHOULD I replace it!!!"
He got pissed and jumped in the $$$$$$$ car, he avoided me for the next 3 months! I didn't even care if I got canned from that as I will not take that crap from anybody expecily from jerks like him. A month later, he had a diffrent vehicle for a few weeks. Found out that $$$$$$ car broke down and cost $$$$$$ to fix it! HA HA love it!
And now I'm going to replace the tranny in it I got yesterday for $160. At $4.00 gal gas, I can't afford drive the 89 F250(14mpg avg) and have to get the ole 85 Plymouth(25 mpg avg) running. And park the 95 bus(8 mpg).......
I daily drive mine, sometimes it feels like a bit of a tank driving through town but it's practical and reliable. Couple of weeks ago sitting at a stop light on my way home, I noticed someone pull a camera out and start snapping pictures of the old truck as I started to pull away. Ya don't get that with yer Prius.
Seriously Leaf, you have the wrong employer. If you can't work for a Dude, and be who YOU are at the same time, it's a bad fit.
Drive the dang truck and park it out front, I say...
In their defense (I'm not sure why I bother), my truck /does/ look pretty hillbilly (my words, not theirs, because I /am/ pretty hillbilly lol).
They also keep telling my boss that she needs to lose weight. Not cool.
Suffice to say, I've been keeping my eyes peeled for new employment. Not much o' that around here, though. I knew going into it that upper management were bastages, but I need the money. >_> And despite the upper bigwigs being less than human, the aforementioned boss is one of the best I've ever had, and she relies on me, and I don't want to leave her hanging. At least not until the current project is over...
It's an interesting point, and something a lot of folks simply will not understand. My wife has a '05 (Ford) Mercury Mariner, basically an Escape on steroids. All the bells and whistles, heated seats, side mirror defrosters, etc. It runs like a dream, gets 22 mpg, is very comfortable and reliable. But about all I can do to it is put air in the tires and fill the wiper fluid. And running around in Festus, with the windows down and that little radio playing classic country, takes me back to simpler times. I feel better driving him, because I'm doing the work. I came out of Home Depot a few weeks ago and there were four older fellas standing in the parking lot looking at Festus, and when I walked up they asked me all kinds of questions. "They just don't make 'em like that any more," said one. "Yup", I replied. Driving today I was at a stop sign and looked over and saw an old gent on a porch chair. He gave me a smile, then a thumbs up. I was still grinning when I got home.
The other day I was putting gas in my truck and there was a younger kid next to me in his much newer Dodge pick-up. He looked over and said he liked the old trucks and wish he had one
He that said "that thing's pretty old isn't it"? I said yeah it's an 82...30 years old.
He then said "Dang, they don't make those anymore do they"? I just looked at him and said "nope....not since 83"....Haha. Not sure he got it...he was a good kid though!!
What I say when people ask me why I drive my truck on a daily basis...
My Cousin bought a 2010 F-150 4x4, and my 1981 gets better mileage than he does.
And if you can believe the smog analyzer, it's putting out less smog than my girlfriends 2006 Buick Lacrosse. (after installing two new catalytic converters)
Most of the time when people ask about it, I get compliments though.
