OK, here's an idea for a new thread
...We all have repairs and upgrades to do with our trucks, but what are your experiences driving them everyday to work, to get the job done and home again???? Do people think you're crazy? Do you actually spend less money driving an older truck than a newer truck?
For me I can justify it quantitatively as well as having an awesome feeling knowing that my truck is 30 years old and most trucks on the road today will end up as tin cans tomorrow and never get to the ripe old age of 30.
I traded a gas saver to a gas hog. But I love my truck. Everyone thinks I'm insane for it. And people severely underestimate me when I say that it takes me about 5 bucks a day to get to work and back.
Oh well. I feel confident in the fact that my 26 year old truck runs better than my friends 10-15 year old vehicles. Gives me pride haha
I drive my 82 every day to work, except the two days I was fixing the heater core. She gets the same 14mpg that my 2000 Superduty does in town...
I listen to the AM radio in the 82 on the local all news station, and since my drive is less than 9 miles, it goes quick, usually 12-15 minutes depending on the 4 lights on the way.
People at work have asked why I drive her. I tell them: "I feel safer in an all steel real truck versus a recycled beer can." I have seen too many of those little economy cars buried under a real truck to count. And in most of them the driver didn't make it.
And considering how short my drive is, how much would I save driving a car that gets 30mpg in a month? Would it be enough to pay another insurance policy? Enough to pay for payments on an econobox? I think not.
For me I can justify it quantitatively as well as having an awesome feeling knowing that my truck is 30 years old and most trucks on the road today will end up as tin cans tomorrow and never get to the ripe old age of 30.
I've had people point out that my truck looks like crap. My standard response is that it is 32 years old, and 32 years from now it will still look like crap, and whatever they're driving now will be long gone. Sometimes I remind them that when my truck breaks, I pull out a wrench...they have to pull out their wallet.
I unfortunately cannot drive my truck to work everyday....it's about 30 miles each way and I'm getting about 10 mpg...so I drive my focus. At least it's a ford!
Once I fix a few things on my 84, I'll be driving that to work. Maybe not every day, but drive it just the same. The older trucks have more style than todays vehicles, in my opinion. Most newer ones look too cookie cutter.
I try to drive the '86 when I can and usually get compliments on it, even from the Chevy and Dodge guys.
This past summer I was driving my 84 around town, and a Chevy truck pulled up next to me at Napa, the guys get out and say "Nice truck man." Felt pretty good.
Its the little things....like when a buddy spends over $100 for their fuel pump (or WAY more), and mine is $25, mounted to the block and a ten minute repair its AWESOME!!!
I also love the fact that if you want one of these trucks you probably care about it and get grease under your nails rather than simply making truck payments.
Well mine is a daily driver but, not sure that counts. I only do about 5-7k miles a year. But I do love it when people give me a compliment about it. And like was said before, it's not the same old cookie cutter truck everyone else seems to be driving. Love driving it and love working on it.
And as an added plus, it gets better mpg than my cousins 2005 Dodge does.
