67' exhast valve trouble.

ive got a 67'f100 with a 72' 302 and it has dual exhaust. Well im pretty sure i have a exhaust valve problem on the driver side. I tried the dollar bill trick and it ripped the bill. So is there any other things to try befor i have to rip the motor apart again? I tried seafoam through the carb and also tried steam cleaning with a turkey baster. Any help would be very very very much apreitiated.

I'd do a compression check.

should i do that to determine which valve? My buddys got one and I know i could use it on sunday. What should I do once I figure it out? Anything besides yanking the head off to get a valve job?

valve problem

After you do the compression test. Remove the valve cover from the bank that has the problem, have someone spin the engine over and watch that all of the rocker arms are moving the same amount. This a long shot but you could have a weak or broken exhaust valve spring or a rocker arm stud that has pulled out . Kenny Nunez

Ive already removed the valve cover and all the rockers are moving. Some seem looser than others though. The heads are original to the block. How do I tighen them all down right? Is there a spec. lbs I should tighen them? Thanks alot

rocker arms

Being able to move the rocker arms is normal as the hydraulic lifters tend to "bleed down" when the engine is stopped. If you are not hearing any "valve clatter" there is no problem when the engine is running. Kenny Nunez

Well its an old time trick were you hold the bill behind the exhaust pipe. If you have a bad valve than it sucks air in. In turn the bill will rip. Its a pretty nifty trick. Do you think that I might just have a weak spring? That way the valve isnt closing because the springs not strong enough?

valve springs

At this point remove the rocker arms and try pushing down on the springs, if one is broken or weak you should be able to feel it. If you luck out and have a bad spring there is a tool made by K-D that will do the job. Kenny Nunez

Thank you kenny. Im off work tomorrow, so ill see what happens. Can I hook up a drill to the valve and spin it to get the carbon to maybe clean up a bit? Or sit better? Do you think it might work or should I just rip her apart again?

valve problem

I think it is time to break out the tools and get it over with. Find a good machine shop in your area. Did the engine ever overheat ? Does it have a lot of miles on it ? If so there may be more problems with those heads. Also a good time to replace the timing chain. Good Luck , Kenny Nunez

Well I guess you right. I really just dont have the money for this right now. I might just have to park her for a month. The motor only has 15000 miles on it sense it was rebuilt. It never really overheated but always ran warm.
