Flattie short block

Short block is complete .Took the engine shop way to long to get this far . All new parts . New style valves & etc. Holes 1 & 2 were sleeved .Bored .030 over 244 cu. in .Have been very patient and accomodatiing to this person at the engine shop .I think he is trying my patience .I am a very detail oriented person as my profession requires .Furniture restoration , finishing , refinishing and custom cabinetry . See pics in albums .A while ago ( last summer ) took the heads with bolts and water pumps with bolts up to him .Not like he is in town but a few towns N. of here 45 min . drive one way . He needed those parts to pressure test the block .Last week he calls and says he needs some of the other components to button up the block .Says he needs an oil pump also .He asked if I had one .No I did not . A used oil pump in new engine .I think not!! All of the components were media blasted , epoxy primered and painted .No problem on those .He adds bring the head bolts and H2O pump bolts also .I said they were with the heads & water pumps .How could you pressure test the block with out them ? He said they tore the shop apart looking for them but they were not there . I was up there Mon. No bolts in his shop .How could you misplace 50 large bolts painted green ? He asked if I had another set .Yes I do ,so I have been media blasting ,primeing and painting another set .3 hrs . worth .I believe I need an honest talk with him .He hits the frosties way too early in the day for me .The short block looks very nice but looks are not everything when it comes to an engine . He has 2K of mine and no set price on the final engine .Your opinions please .Thanks , Denny

No way around it, you need to have an honest discussion with him. His prices aren't too high, IMO, assuming he's supplying stuff like gaskets, cam, lifters, valves, pistons, rings, and all the bearings. Sleeving and boring add some cost, but not too much. Set a schedule for completion, he needs to eat the cost of new bolts, and set a final cost. I'd expect it to complete around $2500 at most. Make sure the warranty is agreed upon.

Machine shops that are experienced in doing flathead work will have a set of pressure plates reusable rubber gaskets and a set of standard grade 5 bolts for pressure testing the block both before and after machining and sleeve installation . I trust you take my meaning .Lets hope he means a new oil pump ,but if he has 2 grand of your cash why does he not purchase an oil pump .
Just for comparison I had my block work done by a local engine machine shop . What they did was boil the block ,magnaflux ,hot tank drill and install 5 dowels (small crack repair)deck block .003",install 3 sleeves ,bore to .080" oversize, line bore, install cam bearings, grind mains ,020"undersize.throws,.010 undersize and pressure test heads recommended I not use them due to cracks . Price quoted to me after block testing $2345.00 Handshake no deposit required .Final price at completion $2345.00 coffee .

Almost the same as I was recently quoted for virtually identical work. But are those Canadian dollars?

Recently, Canadian dollars have been worth more than our dollars. C$'s have fallen slightly in the last few days. Today it was .9993 Canadian to 1.0007 USD. (according to Bloomberg news)

Here's what I was quoted, including some prices off parts source websites. This was for an engine that has a crack that needs repair, had valves/guides that were severely stuck, and needed almost all new valvetrain parts. Add another $150 for initial mag testing and general inspection:

Visited the engine shop last week .Took him some more parts and another set of head bolts ( which I spent 3 hrs. media blasting priming & painting ) .Asked him how where we stood on parts & payment . Reply was we were even .So $1800 at the engine shop to completely rebuild the short block with all new parts , machine work included .Have another $1398 in misc. parts for grand total of $3168 so far .Am anxious to get it back here and in the frame . But me being Mr. Patience will wait until all is right .

Took the small trailer along and retrieved all the dead parts w/ some scrap metal and stopped by the recycler on the way back .$51 in scrap so it helped with the gas situation . Price here in S.Fla hit $4.02 tues .That is just wrong .Can't afford to feed the 1ST-RIDE with the BB Ford .
