Oil Filter ?

When i leave for lunch or for home after work, my 400 knocks for a few seconds till the oil pressure builds then stops.

From what i searched, the oil filter could be allowing the oil to drain back into the pan.
I have a Wix on it now, and i forgot what the PO had on it ( just bought this truck two months ago). But it never did this till i started driving it to work.
So who makes a good filter that will keep the oil from draining back?

You're going to be hard pressed to find a filter better than a Wix. What brand and weight of oil are you running? How many miles does your engine have on it (approximate if you don't know for sure)? In case you didn't know, NAPA Gold Line oil filters are Wix filters.

I've got a '79 with a 351M, approximately 60k miles. I run the NAPA Gold Line filter (1515) and Havoline 20W50 oil. I run a ranch, so my engine spends lots of time at low speed. In the summer you could fry a steak on my hood due to the heat, so I feel that the 20W50 gives me added protection. Lighter oils get thin as water in our summer heat.

I thought Fram filters were the s#%t till I pulled one off the 460 I had and it was empty after 3000 miles. Now I use Wix on everything I run, I think they are the best out there. A little on the edge(just thinking out loud)your pick-up screen might be partially clogged causing oil to take longer to get to the rest of the engine. Sludge sucks!

I haven't used the "orange can of death" in nearly fourty years. Personal experience and a VERY expensive lesson (over $6000 in damage 40 years ago) well learned.
Had a Fram hydraulic filter fail and it took out a Sundstrand variable displacement pump.
Haven't touched a Fram since.

Hence the "HAD" in the statement. It lost all oil pressure once it was at temp with straight 50w in it.

I think i will try a heavier weight oil.
I have to repair the oil pan any ways, and the gasket is leaking.
So as soon as i get the gasket from JBG, I will pull the pan and check the oil pickup.
Another ? will i be able to drop the pan without lifting the motor?
Its a rear sump pan.

I only run Motorcraft filters on my trucks. I have had a problem with a Fram.
Is your truck a 4x4? If so you can pull the pan with the engine in the truck pretty easily. I just did this on my 1979 with a 400 in my signature. I found a spun #2 rod bearing.
If you are gonna have the pan off I'd throw a high volume oil pump in it. These engines have poor oiling systems and are notorious for bad oil pressure.

Who makes a good high volume oil pump?
So mine being a 4x4 I can pull the pan without lifting the motor?

It looks like there should be enough room to pull it without messing with the motor.

Yeah you can pull the pan without lifting the motor. Like I said I just did this, Its only been a few weeks ago. I did put a jackstand under the frame on the right side so the suspension would hang down a bit but then the pan came right out.
The melling oldstyle posted looks good to me.

Is there any way I can tell what type of pump I have now by looking at it when I pull the pan?

And also on the eBay link, do you have to replace the pump
Shaft as well?
