Ive been patiently watching local Craigs list and Ebay for some time waiting for a second transmission that hadent been buried in the dirt, or caroaded and rusted beyond recognician, that I could get and rebuild at my leisure and still have the one in my truck as a daily driver. Well I found one for auction that was supossidly rebuilt in the 90s and had never been run, or had fluid in it. It was a fair price and shipping wasnt that bad so I got it. I comunicated with the people and they seemed like nice honest people. I know better and even when it arived, the box soaked with red fluid, I thought that maybe the fluid had come from the old converter that they had thrown in. then I opened the box and the front stator came off in my hand, it was snaped off, ok maybe it happend in shipping, so I pulled the pan,and the filter looked as though it was anything but new. Thats as far as Ive gotten in the day Ive had it, but as much as I like to give everyone the benefit of a dought, I think Ive been had. I have already given a posetive feed back, and I wouldent want to spoil anyones rep. prematurely by making a fuss so Ill just have to look at the brite side and be happy that I have another prodject to keep me busy. After all it did say no warenty. And now i have a 70/78 c4, with bell housing and tail shaft, Who knows maybe when I get around to pulling it apart it will be all nice and shinney inside. Buyer beware, I knew that. LOL
That just sucks. Some people didn't have a good upbringing. They probably think it's funny and that they sure put one over on you. I believe in karma. Someday, they'll get what they deserve.
But I have to say I love your positive outlook. Thanks for sharing. You made my day better.
did it say newly rebuilt, never run in the written description? I would have asked for a copy of the rebuilder's bill, parts bill, or at least the option to return it. To give the seller the benefit of the doubt, he may have been sold it as a fresh rebuild, but he should be willing to make good on it if he had put a different condition in writing.
It said that he had put new clutches and seals in the description, but in emails he said he had done a complete rebuild under the supervision of his transmission teacher, and it had never been run, or had fluid in it< he was going to put it in his Mustang and it wouldent fit. I know I could follow up on it, but I dont really feel like shipping it back and all, besides in the back of my mind I knew the risk. And for the money I probably couldnt do any better.
Jimmy, that really sucks. I didn't know you were looking for one, I have one I'd have dang near given you. Still will if you want to ship the pig....
Thanks for the offer Scott, but Its kinda a sore subject with my wife, I think Im just going to let things slide for awhile,at this point any transmission talk, is bad talk around here.
just wondering ?? why didn't you go to the overdrive trans ?? don't they bolt on to the small block ?? I don't know I ask ..and the overdrive is nearly the same price isn't it ???
Hey Jim,
Sorry to hear about your Transmission issues. Like you I've touched nearly all active systems in these old trucks. Doesn't it seem like there are more undesireable characters in certain automotive repair/parts areas than others?
The transmission area seems to be the scummiest of the lot. It's like a place where scam artists have all set up shop. I've had 3 AOD transmissions installed in our 1950 - lot's of voodoo & smoke around
all of them. It's the one area where I know I've been ripped off - What I've "learned":
o You can't buy transmissions on-line or through craigslist - you will be
ripped off.
o Transmissions are best bought in person where you can see
what you are getting and have input on what's going inside.
o Deal with a local shop that has been in a business a long time -
Experience with older transmissions is what you are looking for -
preferably they have an old guy sitting in the corner.
o A local warranty where you can drive up to the transmission shop is
worth something - A 3 year no questions asked warranty from an on-line
supplier is worthless.
Good luck & turn on your "Rip Off Radar "before entering Transmission Land. Hang in there Jim - you aren't alone.
I love this place and all of you people that are the site, Yesterday I had a bad day but instead of going to a bar, or something like that ( wich would be an ideiots move, since ive been sober since 93 ) I log in to vent a littel , and there are dozens of people that remind me that people care about me hear, Im home. Well with that out of the way ill give an update on the c4. I pulled in apart this AM to see what was lurking inside and found that it does have new clutches, bands, seals, and looks like bushings in it, besides the broken front pump stator, and one of the band apply struts was missing and had been replaced with a fabbd piece like the one I showed you guys the snap in bands, a few weeks back, other than the dirty filter and a gouged up, clutch pack where the old band used to ride. It looks like the guy was just inexpeierenced to me, so Im just going to be happy with my purchase. When I was young, fighting was the answer to everything, now at this stage of my life im the opposit. I try to live as scripture shows, somedays Im more sucessfull at it than others. Thanks again to everone on the site, We are very lucky to have a safe friendly site like FTE.

Hi kenjh I opted for another c4 for a couple of reasons, first #1, Im told they are easy to work on, #2, changing trannies back and fourth into the truck will be a snap, #3 My driving habits up here in the hills, is all in town, or winndy roads, and lastly #4, Iv read the c4 is a very stout unit, especially 70 and up, wich can easily be upgraded with different shafts, planatary units and rollerizing, in case I ever get a firebreather motor. Thank you for your input.
I don't think there is anybody on here with a more positive attitude than you have Jim. I always like reading your posts. So sorry that you got taken by one of the bad ones. I have been there myself. Good luck with it, I hope you get some satisfactory results if you contact them again. Or if you don't, that you are able to rebuild it yourself.
