Hey i am looking to do a trade for a 2008 f350 XLT 6.4L v8 4WD. It has 153,000 mi and I heard that this engine model is turning up to have a bad review.. any advice? longterm is a main concern of mine
'08 was the first model year for the 6.4 and so-called Job 1 builds have their fair share of issues. Depending on how it was driven and maintained, that particular truck could be running like a clock...or that ticking could be a time bomb!
I was VERY fortunate to buy my '10 as a brand-new leftover. The best report card for that truck/motor would be an OASIS report, available from a Ford dealer (goes off of VIN). An oil analysis would also be extremely informative, but no matter how you look at it, that's a lot of miles and long term reliability would be far better achieved in a truck with a whole lot less mileage...
Times 2 what Ronin said. I would add that it's not so much that the truck will fail, it's that if it does the cost can be very very high. I'm talking $10,000 or more for a failed fuel rail and some other stuff. One of the biggest complaints is failing rocker arms at 120,000 miles or so. It might be worth it to pay a GOOD diesel tech to take the valve covers off and take a peek before you buy.
At my dealer the only two cases of rocker arm failure were from major lack of maintenance, they don't see this as an issue. I was very concerned about it as well as my warranty is up soon.
The 6.4 uses a considerable amount of EGR, an if left stock and not driven almost exclusively highway, the oil will always be crappy, and things will wear out a lot quicker than earlier engines. Including rocker arms.
I have never heard of failed rocker arms yet from anyone who had a tuner on early.
Well OK. It didn't just come to me in a dream, there is a good bit of discussion on the forum about it. And, I didn't say anuything about a tuner. I would think having a tuner would prevent the rockers from failing if it had any impact at all. I think Cheesit may have some post on the subject. nothing lately though. but it makes sense that because the rocker arms are the fartherest from the oil pump, and the oil in most stock trucks is diluted to some extent, so the rockers would be most vunerable. The truck in question has 150K miles, it may have been repaired already. I'm just trying to help the guy know what to look for.
