I have a 99 5.4 4x4 w/esof, and have a squeel coming from the front left ONLY after it has been parked outside in the cold. It sounds like brake squeel. If i park in the garage, it doesn't do it. Depending on the outside temperature, it may or may not go away after a while. If I lock the hubs manually, or put it in 4wd, it goes away. What am I up against? THanks.
I don't know about the temperature aspect. But ...
When a wheel hub needle bearing (spindle bearing) is bad .... it will often make a noise when you are driving with the locking hubs *not* locked in. Because the wheel hub is rotating around the axle end, via that needle bearing.
When the locking hub is locked in, then the wheel hub and the axle end are moving together as an unit .... no rotation ... no noise.
Its worth checking ... before you damage that axle end.
