Ok I just bought a 73 F250 when I bought it it started right up and ran ok. The guy told me that it needed to be timed. Haven't timed it yet but when I got it home it would die when I would put it into reverse and in drive. So I park it and the next day I started it up and took it for a spin to warm it up when I got back same thing. What is the problem I'm about to take it to mechanic but if it's something I can do myself to save some money I will. It has a 460 automatic Trans. Some ideas would be great.
You have a great vehicle to learn about being your own mechanic. Before you know it, as you fix things on your own you will be a bit of an expert in that area. Otherwise your mechanic is going to become your best friends as there is always something to fix on these trucks... It can be really cheap or really expensive. Your choice.
What is the best way to check for a vac leak. Also where is the best place to get info on how to set the timing, adjust the carb?
Also, get a can of WD-40 or similar. Start by spraying around the base of the carb., along the edges of the intake manifold then along any vacuum lines. If there is a vacuum leak you'll notice a change in the idle.
Another thing you might check is the vacuum advance on the distributor. Very common for them to go bad and leak.
