i have a 1987 FS bronco 4x4 with a 5.0 and a C6 tranny . what 4-speed automatic transmission if any can i put in this for better fuel economy . looking for one that i can take the old one out and put new one in without alot of issues . thanks
You will need the TV (throttle valve) cable setup to run an AOD. It can be done (it was a factory optional slush-box) but it will not function without this.
One thing you have to watch is too tall an OD. If you have 3.55s and 31 inch tires, that 302 isn't going to pull OD on any little bit of an incline, and barely on the flat under 65 mph I'd guess.
If you have 4.10s or more, it might work ok.
Do some math on your annual miles driven, current mpg vs. projected mpg--heck, be generous and increase your mpg 20%. See if this will ever pay off.
OEM axle gearing in the Bronco with OD transmissions was still 3.55:1 (unless you have a 300 under the hood, then its 3.08:1 stock) The OD gear in the AOD is 0.67:1 The 302 pulls just fine with stock tire sizes LT235/75R15/C - 31x10.50R15/C (between 29" and 30.7" ACTUAL inflated diameter) and OD. Get much bigger and things start to go south quickly. Its worse with the E4OD which relies on engine and axle rpm's to calculate shift points. You wouldn't want the headache of an E4OD anyway... it NEEDS the computer.
I would tend to agree though that it seems a hefty undertaking for something that would most likely yield only marginal changes in MPG. Save fuel by adding propane injection or dropping engine sizes. The 302 rev's its little heads off pulling a full-size Bronco around anyway.
