Guess, i will chip in the bucket. When i had my 82 mustang and before we got my license, and one day after i got out of auto shop class, we went to the nearby Safeway station to drop a few bucks in. After words the car ran really bad and we went through a similar trial of replacing things then a friend of ours who works for Ford said the gas my be bad. So we dumped the tank and cleaned it out then refilled with a better quality gas and it ran good as new.
The old gas we couldn't even get it to light with a lighter in our gravel driveway. It isn't something you would immediately think of though.
I spilled some when I changed the fuel filter and it smelled good, but couldn't tell it was bad from that. Talked to another friend in the know and said that it sounds like a weak fuel pump to him. Also mentioned the black crud that came spraying out was an indicatoin of a pump about to fail. Priced a new pump with resivoir today, $150 for a bosch unit with liftime waranty.
UPDATE: $147 later, a few hours cussing at a stuck bolt, etc. New Delphi pump installed this morning. (3:00 am!) Waited for cooler temps to get started. It has been stalling ALOT in this hot weather and more when the tank was below 1/4, then 1/2, figured it was that time! Dropped the tank +1/4 full and installed new pump. reinstalled it, cycled the key a couple times to prime it and it lives! Made a trip with a trailer 23 miles west of me to load a tower from a buddy and back home with no problems. Will know for sure Monday if the problem is truly fixed now. Sorry, didn't take pics of the install, maybe the next time or next truck.
So far so good Idleing around town after work in 100+ temps and it didn't stumble once where before I woulda spent 5 minuets at each light trying to get er to restart.
