Been having issues for a couple of months with my 78 F100 302/C6 2wd pickup. I have replaced the following items: battery, voltage regulator, coil, alternator, starter solenoid. The last time I got it started I let it run for 30 mins and then shut it off. Since that day I haven't been able to get it started. It will crank, sometimes slow, other times normal, it will sputter some but never fire. I have been noticing that the battery cables and starter cables are getting smoking hot after cranking the motor a short time, yesterday the ignition switch hung and it kept cranking until I wiggled the key. Any clues on what my problem may be? Thanks for the help
Got home and tried to start it again cranked it a couple of times heard a noise under the hood, checked on that and found my. Negative/ground cable had melted off the batt post. Is my problem in the starter or ignition?
You may have a dead short in the starter. Pull the starter and have it tested. The ignition timing being off can cause the same problems, making it pull a lot of voltage to try and start the engine. It will also over heat the battery cables.
How old is the starter, your post did not say you replaced it. When they get old and the the bearings can wear down and the armature will set down against the field. Armature winding's go bad. Bad brushes.
To be honest I do not know how old the starter is, I had a Jasper engine put in it 3 years ago and do not know if this starter if from the original motor (my guess is that it is, so it would be 1978 with 70,000 miles on it
