I'm having my engine rebuilt (hopefully starting this week), and I'm finalizing the parts list. Here's what I'm starting with:
428, cast iron heads, Edelbrock 750cfm carb, headers.
I'm going to stick with the cast iron heads (getting rebuilt, hardened seats etc).
For the intake, I'm leaning toward the Edelbrock Performer 390.
My rebuilder likes ISKY cams, so now I have to decide between these two:
Part No. Lift Lash Hot Duration Duration Lobe
Cam Only Grind No./Type APPLICATION RPM-Range INT. INT. INT. INT. Center
EX. EX. EX. EX.
351262 262-SUPERCAM 2000-5500 .488 .000 262° 208° 108°
HYDRAULIC .488 .000 262° 208°
I use the truck as a daily driver, and frequently haul my construction trailer (6500 lbs). I think in the future (once the body work is done), I'll probably wind up using it more as a weekend cruiser. So in the mean time I need to balance drivability and towing capabilities with the idea that in the future it's going to become a toy.
Of the two the first would be better but 351256/262 would probably be better for your application if it must be an Isky cam.
Hi Alex -- Thanks for your insight! I debated on the 351256/262. If I read the description right, it looks like an RV cam to me. I've had rv cams before (albeit in sbc's), and was never particularly impressed.
Am I reading the description correctly?
Yes it says RV cam. It also says the best towing cam which will be best for you if you haul a 6500 lb trailer. I've used several RV cams and they're all different. Most people overcam their engines thinking if some is good more is better. You don't say if you are using headers and the ones you've listed require them.
Alex, you nailed it! Big is perceived as better every time. That's how I wound up with a 750 Edelbrock, rather than the (probably) more appropriate 650...
Yes I'm running headers and a big a** dual exhaust.
Gears are 4.56/4.57
ok write me a list , more info the better
engine cubic inch
heads stock ? valve sizes ? ported ?
cam all specs
type of cam :solid ,hydraulic,roller
compression ratio
carb size
intake manifold : brand model and single ,dual plane ?
headers ?
will run sim asap
Hi Mike.
428
stock heads (can go get the number, but it's rainy outside, and I might melt).
headers, dual exhaust
Edelbrock Performer intake (probably, haven't completely decided yet, otherwise the Performer RPM intake)
Edelbrock 750 cfm carb
One of the three isky cams as noted above (http://www.iskycams.com/onlinecatalog.html, on pages 146, 147)
9.5:1 pistons, probably. My intent is to be able to run 87 octane fuel.
