I have an 89 F-350 with a 351w, 5spd and I'm wondering if the front and rear axles are stock, especially the rear because it seems to be posi alot. And what would the tranny in it be? The synchro's are out of 2nd and 4rth and it goes into reverse a little hard, its not a serious problem b/c im used to double clutching it and if it is coasting forward a little it goes right into R but I'm afraid my girlfriend may strip 2 and 4 so i might replace it. I guess the best scenario would also be to not let her drive it lol. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you
You've probably got the ZF 5speed, a staple in these 5speed rigs. As far as axles, it could have a limited slip rear end. Check the sticker in the door jamb with the vin on it, it will have the axle cdoes and we can decipher from there. BTW, we love pics here.
If the rear end hasn't been swapped or upgraded, should be a 3.55 non-limited slip, could always pull the cover and see as well, could never hurt to change the fluid....
thank you i was really questioning the rear b/c the guy i bought it from said he had put a dana under it but my parts guy said the tag was for a sterling
I guess if you're still not sure what it is, take a picture and post it. That should clear up all doubt. The zf5 is a tough tranny, the one that I took out of my truck wouldnt go into 5th without leaning into it really hard, and 3rd was getting almost as bad. The previous owner pulled 5th wheel trailers with it though so I'm sure that took a toll on it.
The Dana 60 front end thats in your truck should be a kingpin front end which is the pinnacle of D60s. And the Sterlings are pretty tough axles too. Even without limited slip, both tires could still grab at once here and there.
If you do have a ZF-5 which is about 99% probable it's a great trans. IMHO I would do a service on it and change the lube ZF-5's are REQUIRED TO RUN ATF !!! NEVER anything heavier. The clearances are VERY tight in there and ATF works best. I persoanlly use 1/2 C. Lucas Synthetic additive with the Mobile1 synthetic ATF ... you use less than 3 QT's and worth it !!!
The ZF-5 has 2 PTO/ inspection openings at the rear of the trans both covers have magnets... remove trash as needed.
My F250 has a 10.25 rear end also with the code "39" = 3.55 non-LS ... if you open it, change to the Mobile 1 gear oil + the rest of the Lucas synthetic additive.. I change mine every year ... or so Dave
