There are two of them on top of the engine on my 99 7.3 and the one towards the back gets really hot! is it the sylinoid that is bad. no codes come up!
Just looked at a pic and its labeled as a GPR. Truck didn't even run for 2 min and it will almost burn your hand
Never felt one before. But I think they stay on for two minutes so it will be a little hot. Some else will jump in that knows more then me on this one.
The front one is the AIH relay and probably not energizing when you start as it requires specific conditions including parking brake set.
If your GPR is getting hot, you should replace it. More than likely the inner plate or one of the posts are shot and the energy is being turned into heat there instead of at the glow plug.

The one toward the front is the Air Intake Heater (AIH) relay.
The other one is the Glow Plug Relay (GPR). If it is too hot to keep your finger on there is a problem. It is most likely the GPR needs to be replaced. When the contacts get pitted conductivity will decrease and cause the relay to heat up.
