p0344 code

My truck started to sound like it was running out of fuel, I switched to the rear tank but it kept getting worse and stopped running. I turned it off and it fired right up again and after a few seconds of rough idling it went back to normal. It was OK for three miles and then did the same. It kept on doing it so I did the following. Cleaned out the fuel bowl and replaced the filter, checked the fuel bowl after problem but it was full. I flew in a scanner and it gave me a code P0344 and I changed the CPS less than a month ago to the new grey one. I am on a small island on Cayman Brac, there are no dealers here to help me. Any advice please. Could it be the IPR?

Sometimes a lot of cranking can set a CPS code clear it and see if it comes back.

Have you check fuel pressure?

Fuel Pressure

Do I check the fuel pressure at the fuel bowl or somewhere under the valve cover by the injectors?

On the driver side of the fuel bowl at the Schrader valve. It looks like the end of a valve stem that would be on your wheels. You can use a stick style tire gauge you want a min. of 50psi.

I too am having the same issue. A while back my truck just died in town doing about 30 to 35. My Superchips programmer gave me the P0344 code, Camshaft Pos Sensor Circuit Intermittent (bank1/1 Sens), and the P0603 code, Internal Ctrl Mod KAM Error. I expected the P0603 as I was running an Edge high performance tune. So I ran to the parts store and replace the CPS, still would not start. Towed it to shop, they put there reader, Snapon I believe, on her and told me the injector drive module (IDM) and my valve cover gaskets were back. So I ordered replacements and installed and the truck ran fine.

At least until a couple days ago. Again I was using the Edge high performance tune and have been with no problems, occasionally going to tow safe or stock tunes. My CEL came on, so pulled codes, P0344, P0236, Turbo Boost Sensor A Circuit Performance, and P1211, Injector Control Pressure Above/Below Desired. Fearing the Edge was doing something again, I cleared the codes, took it back to stock, than used the Superchips tuner used high performance. (I'm a sucker for the horsepower). Truck was running fine.

A couple days later, the truck started loosing power going down the road and than died. Would not start again. Changed fuel filter, but bowl was full. Codes P0603 and P0340, also a CPS Error code. Fearing I fried my IDM again, I order another one and installed it. Also replace the CPS. Truck tried to start, running really ruff, puffing white smoke. Would not smooth out. Radiator water is fine. Even tried another (think it's called) ICM, the computer. P1111, everything OKY DOKY is all that shows.

Did a lot of searching on the site for other possible causes. All wiring looks good. Oil was low, but up in the HPOP. Even changed oil. IPR has some crap in screen, but not plugged. Did find oil on the inside of the left front valve cover outer plug???? Pulled valve covers, inner plugs and wiring look good.

Don't mean to hi jack this thread. Just hoping we can find a common problem to solve both our issues as they seem to be the same.

Could the valve cover gasket pass through connectors be bad?
Could a lift pump failure be the culprit?
Or maybe the HPOP?

Where did you get your CPS? If the answer is something other than Ford or International, you need to get another one (from Ford or International). The parts store ones are junk.

Also, quit using the Edge programmer. Here is some light reading to explain why. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...rogrammer.html

Check your fuel pressure as was suggested to the OP as well, a bad "lift pump" (fuel pump) will typically be quickly apparent by a low fuel pressure reading.

Fuel Pressure

I checked the fuel pressure and it was at 37 to 45 psi when the truck is at idle when I rev it up above 1800rpm to 2500rpm the pressure goes down to almost zero. I have swapped IDM's with my other truck and still no improvement. The CPS was a genuine Ford part from the dealer. The oil in the reservoir for the fuel pump is full. I am going to order a IPR to see if that helps. I hope we can fix it, this truck is very important to our business, thanks for the help so far guys.

Fuel Pressure

Just read your reply on the fuel pressure, so you think I should get a new lift pump?

Before you change the pump check the FPR spring. Just above where you check the fuel pressure you'll see a 3/4" brass plug pull it and see if the spring is broke

Spring

Removed the 19mm brass plug and removed spring with a needle nose pliers and it looks OK, installed it again and replaced the plug.

Fuel Pump

Thanks a million, I will let you know how it goes with the new pump, it takes a week or so to get the parts here from the US.

Yes Nate I did change the fuel filter and removed the fuel bowl and cleaned it out.
