I have a 4wd f150 with the single shocks, has anyone put bilstiens on there as replacements? Or what kind do you have and would you recommend them over others and why?
My truck is not lifted and rides around on 31 or 32's.
I do have Bilstein's on my F350 and my Porsche. I had them on my Ranger.
I feel they are some of the best shocks out there for normal to heavy duty usage. They tend to firm up the ride without ever being harsh, plus they tighten up the suspension (though any new shock would do that over old worn out shocks).
I've had/have KYB, Monroe, Gabriel's, and Koni. The Monroe's and Gabriel's are OK for normal usage, but are too soft for me, plus they wear out quickly. The KYB's are stiffer, but not really valved per application, and they also tend to wear. I like the Koni's, but for sport cars. I don't think they make truck shocks.
FWIW, I just put the Bilstein's on the F350 last year, and have done a fair bit of crappy dirt road driving and heavy hauling, and they control the ride/bounce over the washboard/pothole roads we have very well. Previously, with very worn out Gabriel's, the truck would crash and jitter over the same roads.
I also swapped out the rubber sway bar bushings with poly at the same time.
KYB has the monotube shock, which I would like to try. I suspect they would be similar to the Bilstein's, but are a little cheaper.
Monroes bottom line might be bet the magnums are designed for trucks all the way to class 8 there stiff but not harsh I would never own a different shock I love the way they ride... But different strokes for different folks
i have kyb on my 94 f150 and bilstein on my 97 blazer. i like them both. i also have family and friends using rough country, pro comp, tokico, and edelbrock shocks. i was told that rough and pro shocks were alright. nothing to brag about. my friend use's tokico shocks on a 2000 silverado and likes it and another friend use's edelbrock shocks on a 1995 silverado and likes the way it works. i had my kyb gr-2 shocks about 5 yrs now and it seems to be doing fine. i'm kinda wondering when its going to wear out. what is the life span of shocks anyways.
Not familiar with Billies on a truck, but love running them on German cars. The only thing available for them is KYB, Billie, or Sachs-Boge. KYB= kill your butt. Sachs are always comfort, so a little weak for good driving. Billie is a great fit IMO, I've been using them for a few years.
If you're looking at one of the in-town retailers you might be paying a little high. Call bilstein, if Ford isn't on their website, and get the part number. Then check out some places like autohausaz.com, partsgeek.com, pelicanparts.com, and you can find them cheaper. Let me know if you need some more info on them.
I have the Bilstein 5100 series on my 4X4 F-150 and on the rear of my F-250. Standard Bilstein HDs on the front of my F-250. I'm happy with them so far. They stiffened up the ride a little on both trucks, but it's not too much. They still ride pretty smooth for a truck on and off road.
