Been working on restoring my grandfathers 68 SB FS doing a ground up resto.Blasted the frame and painted it, rebuilt the front end, converted the rear end to posi, rebuilt the C-6 front to back, put T bird 390 pistons, short rods and a 378 crank in the tired 360 along with mild edelbrock cam, performer manifold, Edel 600 carb and Hedman headers.Rigged up the radiator, along with starter switch and on/off to the coil, oil and H2O gauges, hooked up a battery and solenoid , took out the plugs, turned her over till I got oil pressure ....but no fuel to carb. Replaced the fuel pump...viola fuel but no fire....replaced plugs, new coil, points, condenser, rotor and cap...hit the makeshift starter button and.....purrs like a kitten. 62 years old and still lovin it. Those that buy their old iron ready made or have someone else do all the work for them don't know what they are missing. When the 390 fired off it was damn near the same feeling I had when my first child was born..... heaven
now comes the boring part....attacking the rust monster lurking at various spots in the cab. Is dipping done anymore to strip paint and nuetralize rust or has the EPA effectively shut that business down?
Rattler, There is a place in Jackson ,MS. that can dip entire car bodies and the also get them treated to Electroless nickel known as E Coat. They have a connection with the Nissan plant nearby who does this for them. If this is too far from you ,google Redi strip .I am also the original owner of a Lunar Green 68 Ranger short bed purchased August 68. Keep up the good work!Kenny Nunez
Thanks for the info. I am north of San Antonio so Jackson is a ways away. Will google redi strip. My grandfather bought this truck about 3 weeks before I graduated from high school in 68 and he let me use it graduation night. A SB FS F100 was THE s**tkicker truck to have back then so I was in high cotton that night. He passed on and the truck went to my mom. Pop drove it till he got too old and was going to sell it for $300. I told him I'd give him $500 and he said "sold to the highest bidder". AS of today the odometer shows 82,872.4 original miles.
I've got grandkids 7,5 and 4 and hopefully one will be interested in it in 10 or 12 years. Not too many kids can say they are driving their great, great grandfathers pick up truck!
