]i have a 1997 f150 4x4 with 163000 miles on it. today i was going around the truck checking fluids when i checked the oil and it was a little low so i went to add some and underneath the fill cap there was this whiteish grayish looking goo. it was also all the way down the neck of the fill tube and down in the engine a little ways. i had no idea what it was so i cleaned it out and added some oil then i went and took it for a drive and when i got back and checked it again it was back. Has anyone ever seen this before or know what it might be?
the picture below was after i drove it. there was more there before i cleaned it
A normal conditon that is dependent on how much moisture there is in the crankcase and how much the truck is driven to fully hot temperatures and not driven short time periods.
It is condensation at the highest coldest point in the closed crankcase system.
It came back from the short drive your took.
Todays oils will react to moisture like that.
As a test sometime, spread some oil outside on concrete and let it rain a couple time on the patch.
You will see the same tendency of the oil to breakdown.
Only other remote possibility is there is a cooling system leak internal but I doubt that is the case here.
Not to worry unless the fill jug keep getting low.
Good luck.
The 4 to 5 miles is not enough to fully heat the motor and oil to drive off the contaminants and crankcase moisture that normally is exhausted through the intake manifold system connection.
The residue is correctly diagnosed above. Although, the use of full synthetic oil eliminates this whitish build-up. The synthetic oil cleans your engine unlike the regular petroleum oil. This residue build-up has been there every time I've run regular petroleum oil. Switch to full synthetic and the residue will be gone.
thank you for the quick replies. it just scarred me a little bit when i say it. i am planning on getting oil this weekend and changing it. is there any way to clean the old oil out of the engine to do a little better oil change. ive heard of putting a little diesel fuel in the oil before draining it to clean the engine will that work
I used to use "Gunk Engine Flush" in a 1 qt. can. I think it was just kerosene, but I've heard "Auto RX" is much safer. Call around and see who stocks it.
