moisture in oil?

added a half quart of oil to the engine last night and saw this:

this is a new-to-me vehicle it has 110,000 miles on the clock (2005 5.4 3v).

had fresh oil in it when i bought it, i changed it at 4,000 miles. currently it is full of NAPA brand full synthetic and it has about 2,000 miles on the oil. was hoping to get 7,000 out of this oil change so that i can get back to a 5,000 mile interval with my usual Trop Artic oil.

is this just moisture? perhaps the PCV is not working? Any things to check that are quick and easy?

Leaving on a 900 mile round trip tomorrow, but i've got a half-day to check things over here tonight.

thoughts?

It's very common for engines that only get short trips in the winter. There's usually a dozen threads every winter for this.

The engine doesn't get warm enough for long enough to fully evaporate crank case moisture so it can be extracted by the PCV system, so it tends to condense in the coolest part of the system - the oil filler neck.

Wipe it out and go on your trip.

what's considered a short trip?

i drive 25 miles into work and back every day. is that not enough to get the oil up to temp? 7qts is a lot of oil, but i figured it would be warmed up by then. maybe not?

could this be left over gunk coming out from the previous owner's short trips?
as i said, it's new to me, who knows what kind of life it had before.

25 miles should do it? WAG, maybe the thermostat is getting weak. Heater work good?

engine temp is always consistant by the gauge, always in the middle. heater will cook you out.

never any trips shorter than that on a regular basis, i live 25 miles from town, so it is always a 25 mile drive to go anywhere.

i did take it an hour away and back for two days this week. that's the longest trip i've had it on since i've owned it.

i don't remember all the crud under the cap when i did the oil change .. but it was zero degrees out when i did it, so i may not have cared even if it was there.

wondering if that those hour trips (75mph) cooked some old crap out of the system? IDK. i've never seen this on any vehicle i've ever owned before. first time for me.
