We just bought the Transdapt kit/crossmember to put my 428 in my 62 4x4. With the 65 model2wd mounts it will not work. What model mounts, perches, etc. does everyone use with this conversion? Any and all help would be great. Thanks
Sorry I don't know about this conversion, but as far as 2wd mounts and 4wd mounts: I think, after looking at my 66 4wd and my sons 66 2wd, the 4wd looks like it sits higher in the frame.
Geeeez I have never in my life posted on this site with zero effort from the members! Come on guys! This conversion is not THAT rare. Lots of people have put FE engine in 59-64 4x4 frames. Any and all comments appreciated. Thanks
That would be excellent. Thank you. Yesterday I found a F600 with a 359 FT Engine that has the old 292 mount system. I am thinking if I get the timing cover, front mounts, and bell housing mounts this will work.....
my 64 f250 4x4 had the 6 cy side mounts and i converted to 292 25 yrs ago changed the bell houseing used the front mount for engine. got an extion for fan blade (no elect then)don't know about the balance with that big block
Yes, the frames for a 4x4 and 2wd are different. The 4x4 has no cross member under the engine and 2wd has a nice big one under there. Plus the oil pans are different, rear sump for the 4x4 to clear the front axle.
You can use the mount towers from a '70's 4x4....they will raise the engine a little, also offset it slightly to clear the pumpkin. You will likely still need the rear sump pan if I recall....
Sounds right. I already have the rear sump pan on the 428. I believe the 60' s model F600 with the 359 will work perfectly. It has the front mount, bell housing mounts, and the whole bit. I will call the salvage man tomorrow and see if he will sell the whole package.
Watch out using FT things as the covers are different and the seal opening is for the larger snout the FT crank uses, your 428 uses a wing weight type snout spacer that is a smaller diameter.
The FT bracket may need modifications to adapt to the FE smaller Timing covers. You will also need the FE four wheel drive bellhousing to complete the Mounting system.
Issues in your swap are due to there was no FE engines used in the configuration you want. The Transdapt unit you purchased requires the correct transdapt mounts. A Transdapt mount is depicted below.
You may be able to use this along with the correct insulators.
