Have you searched around in the custom motorcycle field? It seems like all those custom bikes have similar looking bolts all over them

Bobby, yep... but most of what they have is rather small... 3/4" base diameter and smaller...

I need something with a base diameter of around 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" and a height of saaaayyyyy 1-1/2" like my tin foil hat analogy...

after talking to the nice ladies at Mid 50 I think I'm gonna order the bullets that go on the front of the door mirrors... see above... they are made from polished alum ... I can always return them if they are different than discussed...

now to find a bushing/grommet/hickey-thing for the bullets to stick in. A regular grommet doesn't have a panel thickness that will work with my panels... My dress panels are roughly 1/2" thick and most stock grommets don't have that thickness... I'd like to find a two piece hickey-thing that I can insert from both sides that will address that....the search goes forward... onward and upward with an occasional side trip over there !

How about Mooneyes ? They have all kinds of spikes, maybe large enough.

 

I saw some truck accessories bullet shaped nuts 33mm but I thought they might be too big.

 

YEA AX,

the big truck stuff is just too large both diameter and height... been on all the truck chrome sites... most that are bullet shaped are 4.5" high... I'd bang my old bald head on that for sure. Plus I'd have to wear one of those spiked goth collars to match... and that just ain't my look

I have seen spikes and such for front axle end covers on H-D bikes. About 1.5" diameter and varying lengths. Not cheap but might do the job. Can always get the point turned off blunt.

Have you considered those?

Mid Fifty mirror spikes are 1.31 base dia and approx 1.20 long. Seem a little short and round for what you want but maybe not. I took these dim off of the ones I got from them a few years ago.

If you use the axle spikes and drill a hole in the fiberglass on the receiving side, you can line the hole with split fuel hose if you can't find a grommet big enough.

 

Machine shop? Or check with local high/vocational school if someone needs a project. It would be a good learning experience.

 

any value in putting the spike on the lower section instead of the upper?
both will suck at some time or another.

I'm trying to figure out why you think you need something that large. Look at the size of the common racing style hood pin, it is only ~ 3/8" in diameter. I assume all you are doing is using these to keep the fenders from moving around when the hood is latched down not as the latching system. If so the ones I linked to at 1/2" in diameter and 3/4" long would seem to be plenty, I wouldn't expect your fenders will be able to lift up 3/4" at the pins while the hood is latched down? If your doghouse is FG, you're not going to be dropping it from a height, but carefully guiding it into place.

 

You're probably right Ax... I just liked the looks of the cone thingys. I could probably do well just ordering the 1/2 or 5/8" pike nuts and use a decent grommet in the lower section and get on with the program...

AFA the grommet...I'm having a hard time finding something that has a flange thickness wide enough... my fender top is about 1/2" thick and you don't find grommets with that thickness. Tried looking for 'split bushings' and two piece bushings and such... I just haven't found the right search term yet.

For that large a diameter and thickness grommet you might be able to "roll your own" Find some thin walled stretchy rubber tubing the right inside diameter, slip it onto a rod the right size and roll the end down. Glue it with super glue or black weather stripping adhesive to keep it from unrolling. Roll up the other end in a similar fashion leaving a space between the two rolls the width of your panel. If you are going as large as you first indicated you might be able to use a racing bicycle inner tube for the tubing? Problem is there would be little need to rubber grommet a large diameter hole in 1/2" thick material.
