Pulling codes

I do not have an OBD scanning tool. Other vehicles I have had the ignition can be cycled a certain amount of times and the codes will flash via the check engine light of the odometer. What is the trick on a Ford? I have a 2000 F 250 V 10 I just got about a month ago. Driving around town yesterday it was running great. Made a stop, went to restart it missed and chugged and would not restart. Having it towed home later this AM. Dead in the water right now. any help would be appreciated.

If somebody knows how to retrieve codes w/o OBD scan tool that would be great.

Code reader is it. Did you try disconnecting the battery cable for 5 minutes to clear any codes and see if the truck would fire over?
