Question pertronix install

Hello again,

I'm thinking about installing the pertronix /ignitor thingy.
Any helpfull hints?
Any reason not to ?
I sure like all the advantages I read in the catalog.
Will I need to buy a high performance coil?

thanks in advance C & R

pertronix install

Easy install and one of the most important mods available. Pertronix likes 12 volts, so you will need to provide that from an ignition hot source in the run mode. Starting you have 12v to the coil, when you release the key and the switch flips to the run mode you actually have 6-8 volts to the coil. Many bypass the pink resistor wire between the ignition switch and firewall. That gives 12v to the coil in the run mode. I think this is the easiest, just locate it and splice some 18 gage wire using a couple of butt connectors. Do a search here for Pertronix Install, much info has been posted.

pertronix install

In 2001 I failed emissions in Arizona, went and bought a Pertronix conversion for $80.00, installed it in 15 minutes, and passed emissions. Very easy upgrade and eliminates one more tune-up task (points).

Talking pertronix install

Hey I got it in. I really dont like meesing around with lectrical stuff,
but it was fairly simple ... almost too easy.
On my F250 352 V8 I didnt need to mess around with a ballast or find another source for 12 volts.
Red wire to pos and black wire to neg terminal on the coil.
And maybe its in my head but it sure seems to be running a lot smoother and... is it possible for the rpms to have dropped?

well Im out, C & R

All true and if it runs on less than 12v great. Pertroinix likes 12v but yours and mine run on less. At least for now. I still like 650 Idle

I just put the unit and the coil on my 63 F100 w/223. It was running smooth and fine before, but after the install wouldn't idle and ran like a pig. I ran 12 volts from Battery pos, put the timing spot on, but it was a dog. I loosened the distrib and just tweaked it into a little more advance, and Bingo! It runs better than ever! I'm gonna put a white paint dot on my crank pulley to be my new timing point. Timing makes a huge difference on this unit, so don't be afraid to do a little twist and drive, twist and drive to experment. I went to it so I would never have to deal with points and condensers again.

Hope some of you can shed some light on this. I also want to put in a Petronix kit in my stock 289. What I am curious about it the small resistor that was strapped next to my coil. I don't know what its function is, but hope I can get rid of it when I change over to the Petronix. So, does anyone know what it is, what it does and if I need to keep it when I intall the Petronix? Also, I would like to replace my coil with a chrome unit and they seem to come in quite a price range from about $18 to $40. I am hoping I can get an OEM chrome type coil and be on my way to other projects. Thanks for all your help. Jim

That little resistor is actually a condenser, and quiets the ignition system for radio noise. You find them on generators and alternators as well. Some electronic types call them a choke. If yours is in good condition leave it. If it is missing and the radio is quiet, don't worry about it. Radio Shack has replacements. We used to charge these with a plug wire spark and leave them laying around for unsuspecting people that can't resist picking stuff up off the work bench. Good for a laugh unless your the one holding it when it unloads.

William,
Thanks for the help. As you have opened another small can of worms for me, let me ask if this "condensor" is necessary if I have resistor type spark plug wires that are also supposed to eliminate noise in the radio. I have to claim ingnorance on whether it worked effectively or not as I tore the truck apart quite soon after I bought it. Also, do you have a response about the coil? Thanks again, you are helping my 25 watt bulb up to about 3 watts so far. I have so much to learn. Jim

The resistor wire help a lot and you should keep the condenser at the coil too. With todays modern electronics in side radios there not as important as we now understand EMI and there designed not to let it in. EMI = Electro-Magnetic Interference

As for coils the choice is yours. The one that they sell with the kit is good think it called "Fire power" or something like that.
Basically you only need "X" amount of energy to spark off the motor any more really does not help in the normal operation mode now under high load or running hot etc more can be helpfully.

Best of luck.

Thanks, Tony, you've been a great help. This clears up another problem I can now put to bed. Jim
