Pertronix not working..Ideas?

Yet another Pertronix thread, I know. I put a Ignitor 1 in my 66, 352, this weekend. Easy install, but cylinders 2&3 are not firing. I tried setting the "airgap" a few times with no success. I put my old points back in and all is well. I actually did this a couple of times with the same results. I have a new Crane 30k coil if that matters. I left all the rest of the wiring alone. Any idea? Bad unit? I even installed a new cap and rotor just to make sure. Thanks!

I don't know if this will make a difference, but it is recommended to regap the spark plugs from .035 to .045.

There are a few tricks...first off, put one of those rubber hose washers (the type that goes in the hose female end to prevent leaks) inside the black Pertronix ring that goes onto the top of the distrib, this raises the height for better match up to the sensor. Second, the gap tool they give you may be a hair too much, play with it a bit. One other thing, the black ring that goes onto the distrib. has 8 magnets in it, spaced out...check to see the polarity of the magnets, you may have a bad ring...Pertronix sees this from time to time, and replace them...takes a while to get it though...at least for me. Also, be sure your coil has a good amount of
juice, the Pertonix FlameThrower is good and so is the MSD II.
Hope that helps...
Jason

that's what I was looking for...

Thanks for the tips. I thought the gap seemed large as well. I'll try all the tricks again tomorrow. The coil is a dandy new one, working great. I knew somebody had some secrets out there.

I recall the Pertronix uses full voltage to the coil. You may need to remove the resistor wire for the unit to work as it should.

Try Cropdusterdudes suggestions first, though.

With all due respect to him, and I know he is a smart guy, I need to warn you that if you follow all his suggestions, your garden hose will now leak.

tried that too...

Directions actually suggest running 12v staright from the battery if unit malfunctions to eliminate the low voltage possibility as a test. Made zero difference, so power to the unit is not the issue, but thanks.

Pertronix may make a spacer that will fix that hose leak.

Na Greg, I snuck over to your place and used the one from your hose!
Ya...btw, full voltage on the coil for MSD too, it sure makes good fire now.

Sucess!!

I narrowed the air gap a bit and that helped. Only 1 cylinder not firing. I tried moving the magnet piece around and could kill off any 1 cylinder at a time. Mine is an all black sealed magnet, so magnets cannot be repositioned. I then tried the washer trick, ( actually I have some hi-temp silicone o-rings) and voila! Truck fire right up and smooth as silk. Timing was even dead on.

Another question, is it a good idea to go ahead and change the plug gap then? 045 is correct? Thanks.

I installed the ignitor III that called for gapping the plugs .010 over, which in my case w/ a 352 is .045.

gap

This is an Ignitor 1 and it says nothing about changing the plug gap. Of course it said nothing about making it work for me either.

The rubber washer trick worked perfect for me too, I never did anything with the plug gap or timing and all seems good.

i think you should increase the plug gap since you're using a hotter coil- not specifically b/c you're using a Pertronix. more voltage=more ability to jump the plug gap.
