a question from the uneducated and ignorant-how can one tell if a clutch has gone bad or instead the throttle bearing has gone out. now don't laugh-be polite. it is a 92 F-250 7.0 V-8. Can it be the TB without damage done to the transmission?
Throttle bearing--could you mean throw out bearing? That is the bearing on the clutch arm that turns when you step on the clutch.
If that bearing is going bad, it will make a lot of noise when you step on the clutch. Sometimes it will still make noise with your foot off the clutch, but it shouldn't be under load or even turning in that case with most set ups.
If it is bad, it generally will not harm the rest of the trans unless it is run so long as to come apart and tear things up inside the bell.
Replacement requires R&R of the trans, so plan on a new clutch while you are in there.
