Can any body tell me when the throw bearing is going bad?I started hearing noise's and the tranny is getting harder to shift, had to put clutch right to the floor to disingage the engine from the trans at a stop light.this is on my 81 302 with a 4sp od mechanical clutch linkage.I'm thinking I might replace the clutch if I replace the throw bearing, since I will have it apart any ways.I just need to confirm my suspicions. Thanks
86bigred, what kind of noises are you hearing? Have you ruled out pedal adjustment? If you decide to replace things, get a Luk clutch kit; they contain everything you need and are OEM quality. You won’t be disappointed.
It sounds like the bearing might be going bad. See if you can look in the clutch release fork opening with a mirror and flashlight. If it is failing, it is best to replace it before it falls apart. Mine failed and the clutch release fork got caught up in the pressure plate and damaged the transmission, clutch fork and bell housing; not good...
I have a truck that is making odd clunking noises when I depress the clutch and doesnt always want to go into first smoothly. I think its the bearing but I'm not sure.
What I saw after the fact were some very worn pressure plate diaphragm spring tips. My bearing was destroyed, all of the BB's fell out on the street! I suppose you may be able to observe wear and or dryness etc. On a 2WD truck it shouldn't be too much trouble to slide the trans back and swap it?
