Well boys and girls, I think my original TOD might be dying. The other day, I fired up the truck, and while letting it idle in neutral, e-brake on I started hearing a grinding/popping sound...almost like something was trying to lock up. Got home, checked fluid...it was a LITTLE low...put more in it...same thing. When the clutch is pushed, the noise stops. And it's not constant, just every now and then. Sounds to me like bearings are failing. I listened under the truck and it sounds like the transmission...unless its the throwout bearing resonating and sounding like the transmission, which would be great, since the original clutch slips a tiny bit anyhow.
Just wanted some opinions so I know if I need to just get a clutch and some new seals or if I should start hunting a ZF5...thanks in advance!!
Does your truck have a removable inspection plate in the cab? You might be able to peek inside the box and see if it's something simple like a shift fork or other minor part. That's a long shot, but worth the effort as the cover and shifter have to come off to pull the trans anyway.
Remember, the ZF will have a hydraulic clutch set up....get all the parts if you are shopping.
I don't think it does, but I can look sometime. And yea, my truck has a hydraulic clutch setup now, lol. I'm honestly leaning towards TO bearing the more I listen to it. So we'll see...thanks for the reply!
