Recently, it began bogging down on the way home when I changed gears and especially at a stop going into first gear. If I stop the vehicle and turn off the engine to gas up or for any short stop, it will not crank unless I hold the accelerator to the floor. It often will sputter and bog down until after a few tried with the pedal still held down, it will 'catch up' and start up. It only does this when hot. First thing in the morning or when I stop for a long time, it starts anf runs fine.
I recently have changed plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap and fuel filter. I had a mechanic friend hookup his computer to it with the following results:
Oxygen sensor
EGR not opening fully
EGR evaporator
We changed the sensor with no results. I removed and cleaned the egr and it seemed to be working fine.
On a whim, I unplugged the TPS and the truck started better and ran better for some odd reason, even when hot although some if the sputtering still existed.
Any ideas anyone? I dont want to just throw parts at it.
THANKS!
For the record. I hope anyone who is having this problem finds this thread.
I solved this huge problem simpy by replacing a bad temperature sensor that was not telling my engine how to mix air and fuel. A 20 dollar part to end a weekend of nightmares
Please list the numeric codes and when they were displayed. i.e. Key On-Engine Off (KOEO), Continuous Memory (CM), or Key On-Engine Running (KOER). It can make a significant difference of what those numeric codes mean.
The codes all pointed to different things. Egr, 02 sensor, evaporator etc.
I began taking every sensor and external control off, cleaning them and checking for proper operation. When I reached the temp sensor, I noticed one of the prongs was pushed way in, not making contact. I recalled the past few weeks of how I was constantly running on the high side of engine temp and how I had changed the thermostat, flushed the radiator but nothing had seemed to help much. It now made a little more sense so I replaced the sensor and just like that, every single symptom vanished. I drove it to work today with no problems. I read today that the temp sensor tell the computer how to mix the air/fuel. It was starving my engine.
Happy ending!
two most common problems with obd1 fuel injection not working correctly (causing your type of failure, and engine codes) are
temp sensor either air(located in mainfold) or water which there are TWO one for the gauge and one for the computer change the right one [one for computer]!
(or both)
IAC (Idle Air Control) start with cleaning it
just blindly following the codes doesn't allways mean you will fix your problem. Get a mulit meter and learn how to use it and check all the simple things! THEN use your codes. 4/5 times the root of a engine codes in NOT what the code is reading
