I have Googled all sorts of info and it takes me to this site. So I became a member today. Love the info everyone has on here.
I have a 1949 f4 that I am doing a 4x4 conversion on. I want to use the original frame, meaning I dont want to swap yadda yadda. Is there a dana 60 I can use for what im trying to do?
I got a smokin deal on a dana 60 out of a 98-2004 f350 for 120.00 but it looks to be too wide. Also im shooting for a big block in this with a c-6.
Anyone have any suggestions or am I way outta my reach on this?
It took me 4 hrs to figure how to post on here let alone pics!! ha-ha! I'm in contra costa county. you? I have pics on my phone but none on here. Soon I hope!
I have a 1949 F4 as well... I'm having the motor rebuilt next week. I'm going to keep it mostly original. I have no darn idea how to post photos on here either... Why the heck did they make it so difficult?
Only way to really find out is to measure. My guess is it will be wider than the original, whether it is too wide is up to you. Somewhere on here is a thread on making a 4wd, I believe he used an early bronco front end. Thought I had it saved. By the way that is way cheap for a 60, be careful I know the 250's used dana 50's during that time period. A ford 60 in my area would go for close to a grand.
Marinespt... Have you sold any parts for the f~4? I have a ton of parts but dont know if there is a market for that kinda stuff.
Semper Fi by the way!!
Jeep thanks, I will look some more on here to see what I find. Im going to keep the f~4 front fenders so I think the tires will sit great with some offset wheels and some 38s.
Semper Fi Rockabilly! I don't plan to sell any part from my truck.... it's pretty much complete... just need a motor rebuild some paint... then I'm driving that sucker to work!
Welcome to the site. I had a house in San Ramone many years ago, we used to drag race where the Phone Co. complex is now, wow did they ever build that area up. for posting pics you mite try hitting the FAQ button on upper blue tool bar and then hit i think ist general forum use, on the drop down menue, it helped me. If not there are many places, like "READ FIRST", its the first thread on the site (in red), Fomoko1 put together a lot of the most asked questions, its also very helpful. Ok thats it for now, looking forward to seeing your truck.
Thanks underthebridgejim. Yes the whole area has exploded in the last 10 years and it sucks too.
Marinespt, If you need anything let me know... I have a ton of stuff that I am tossing in the scrap pile or going to try to trade.
Yep, all quite possible. I know they make the motor and trans mounts, just not 100% sure if there is any thing different from your year to the 53-56s I'm use to.
How large of tires are you planning on running? A Dana 44 can do 35" pretty easily, I'm planning a Dana 60 for mine as well as I want to run 37". Don't forget to find a rear that has the exact same gearing as the front, might help to get the rear out of the same truck, that way wheels will be easier to match up, plus new brakes. You'll need a new Master Cylinder to have the disc brakes.
That is a smoking deal on that D60, if you find it doesn't work for you you might be able to sell it for what they are worth and buy a set that fits. Also wheel options can effect how well it fits, backspacing can go along ways.
Welcome aboard, FTE is a very friendly place with a whole lot of knowledge.
Thanks everyone! It is a fun project. Time and money right? Lord knows we all have plenty of both! LOL!! Here is the deal, I did not do my homework and I did some research on the front axle. It is a DANA 50 from a 98-01 super-duty. Now I am trying to off this on craigslist for trade or 300.00. I think I am going to try a 44 out of a bronco or f250 early 70s late 60s. The spring perches are close to what I need.
I think around 74 they started to use disc brakes, I could be wrong but I thought it was sometime around there. Just a thought if you wanted disc brakes up front.
Yes I do want disk brakes, I would prefer drum in the back though. Just my preference. I also have a question about a/c and heater system for this. Is there a aftermarket system for these trucks? Or can you pull a system out of a earlier ford and use it?
