351W question

I am midway through a major headache on a Bronco w/a 351W. I was hoping to quick drop the oil pan, replace the gaskets and drop back down. Wrong discovered even after jacking the motor up 8 or 9 inches I have to drop the oil pump just to get the pan out. Here's the question. When reinstalling the oil pump if the bolts are all lined up can I assume this drive shaft for the pump is lined up correctly and up in it's drive slot or can this shaft roam free even if the bolts tightening it up are snug. Better said will the shaft be lined up only if the bolts are snug. I have the bolts all snugged but am unsure if this oil pump shaft went into it's gear correctly because I can't see from the bottom if this shaft is in right. I would hate to have this thing all tightened up replaced new oil etc and discover the oil pump isn't working right and have to tear it all apart again.

Have someone to rotate the distributor rotor when you put the oil pump on and see if it moves like it should or binds up
