The good and the wierd

Hey folks, just bought a 92 ranger 4.0 4x4 extd cab. Love the truck but clutch is wierd. Engages at about 3/4 travel up. Will mess with that soon.

I also read that rangers started in 1982 but I used to own a 1981 4x4 6cyl. Anyway, I'm here now with a new toy. More to come as it happens...

peace, Rob

I'm not 100% positive but i beleive the long clutch is a ford thing. Ive owned quite a few rangers all manuals from 91-2000 and it seems they all have had a long clutch pedal such as yours. It doesn't seem to bother the engagement of the clutch right?

Not really sure yet. I will need to get a few drives on it to really see. I just do not remember the long clutch on my previous 1981 ranger because it was many many years ago. The f250 I had was much different. The guy that sold the ranger to me said he had issues with 3rd to 2nd downshift. I do not seem to feel the same issue. Maybe he was jamming the gears, I just can't say what his driving habits were. I've spent several hours going over the forum for clutch issues just to get a taste of what others have had to deal with. I wonder if going to a more robust clutch kit could change that for the better. Any thoughts on that?

i can't speak for the 81 but you may want to try bleeding it. How many miles are on it? You may want to think about changing the fluid as i know that the fluid can break down and cause a spongy feeling clutch pedal. I just changed fluid and bled the clutch in my 01 sd and it made a world of difference.

Depending on your driving style a "heavier" style clutch may not be needed.

The owner said 8k - 10k on current clutch. The bleeding exercise seems to be a common thread (no pun intended) when I searched clutches here. Tomorrow I will be able to take it out and really see what the deal is, make notes and such. The tires are over sized and bumper has a tow ball so that means two issues of wear and tear. Include a crappy driver and anything goes. I'll have specs posted soon.
