I have a stock 88 ranger 4wd with 69xxxme original miles on motor an tranny. I was wondering could i put a 302distributor in it and keep the factory 5 speed transmission in therecause or would i have to swap it too.
If your Ranger is stock, it doesn't have a 302 in it, so no, a 302 distributor won't work with any engine you may have. What's wrong with your stock distributor?
Ok, that makes more sense. There's a 5.0 2WD Ranger near my house and it looks like an easy fit. But he swapped trans and all, which is not really an option for you since yours is a 4x4. But I'm sure something is out there for it. But I gotta ask, are you sure this is a wise move with today's $5 a gallon gas?
The guys doing the 4x4 swap just use the F-150 trans and X-fer case, either the 205 or 208. Most in your area worry more about being smog legal. Need a V-8 trans to live for any time.

Yeah i know gas is gonna kill me but its not my daily driver. Its just a toy for the weekends.
You're not only on the wrong forum for this, but on the wrong website. The Ranger Station - Your Ultimate Ranger Resource go there and look in the V8 forum, there's more than a few guys there who've done what you want to do.
