Ok, I was at the beach the other day and realized that my 4x4 doesn't work. I found out when I got stick in about 2 feet of soft sand. I have the automatic 4x4 switch, when I Turn the switch the light comes on but my 4x4 doesn't work. I have tried reversing and going forward. What really worries me is that when I get out and manually lock the 4x4, it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?
When you turn the switch to 4x4, can you hear the motor on the transfer case ruining? With the transfer case in 4x4, can you turn the front drive shaft by hand? With the transfer case in 2wd, can you turn the front drive shaft by hand? With the hubs locked, can you turn the front drive shaft by hand?
When in 2wd I can turn the drive shaft, when the automatic 4x4 is engaged, I can't turn the drive shaft, when the hubs are locked I can't turn the drive shaft.
By ruining, do you mean engaging? When I turn the **** I can hear the transfer case. I'm checking the other things right now.
There is an eletric motor that operates the transfer case. With the engine off and the key on, you should hear the motor when you turn the switch to 4x4.
Put your truck in 4x4, then turn the wheel all the way to one side. Start moving and see if you don't get a binding feel in the steering wheel. Sounds like your 4x4 is working.
The vacuum pump supplies vacuum to the front hubs to lock them and unlock them. It also is used to close, open the blend door for the ac and heater. My vacuum pump is on the passenger side firewall between the ac fan and battery. This pump should come on when you turn the key to the on position. You will hear it when it runs.
OK, sounds like either the solenoid is bad or you have a vacuum leak on one of the hoses going to the front hubs. Follow the vacuum lines from the solenoid to both front hubs to see if there are any cracks or broken lines. The solenoid is on the passenger side firewall next to the battery. It has a white plastic top on it.
There is another thread on here that is talking about changing out the solenoid.
