What are the best ones to use? Cork or rubber? Motor is a 390 and the PO put on some chrome cheapos when he put the motor together and the passenger side leaks a bit and it runs down the header tube so I have a wonderful oil burning smell for the first 30min of a drive :/.

I prefer cork....use silicone glue on the valve cover side (since it is proably uneven)...this makes it easy to install, remove cover, adjust valves and re-install too.
Cork lightly glued to the VC, then some grease on the other side and you can take the covers on and off easily thereafter, if you don't crush th ecork with the bolts. Different valve covers have different sized slots to hold the ears of the gasket. On some (I think the Power by Ford ones) the cork gaskets fit perfectly, everything is great.
On mine the slots were smaller so I used rubber gaskets and razor bladed the ears a little so they would fit into the slots. No glue on rubber, so far, so good!
I have sone cheapo chrome ones on there right now and I pulled one side off, 2 of the holes were mushroomed so I flattened those out and stuck the gasket back on with silicone to the valve cover. This is only temporary unroll I can get the cork ones.
Cheap chrome covers can be the hardest to keep sealed. Often, the slots for holding the gaskets either aren't there or not quite the right size. The profile of the metal where the gasket sits may not be the same as the factory covers, allowing the gasket to slip when the bolts are tightened down. The metal can also be a thinner guage material, letting the covers flex between the bolt holes, or deform around the bolt holes.
These reasons are why I stick with the factory covers, or go with a good set of cast aluminum covers.
Thanks everyone for there input, I got some cork gaskets then siliconed them to the valve covers and put some grease on the head side. So far no leaks .
