Starting / Starter Issues
First off, sometimes (not always) if it's been off for just 10-15 minutes, when I to restart it, it is flooded. If I hold the throttle to the floor it will restart without too much trouble. There has been a couple of these times I have smelled gas even.
Running stock mechanical fuel pump so shouldn't be too much pressure. Brand new Holley 4160 vacuum secondary. Didn't do anything to it, out of the box. Could the floats need adjustment on a new Holley?
Second, noticed recently that sometimes the starter don't stay engaged. Turns over for a couple seconds then disengages and winds up. Could this be an indicator the starter going bad? Does it both hot and cold. Would just assume replace it before it strands me if that's the problem. Almost as if the solenoid don't have enough strength to hold the bendix drive in. Hope it's not a bad spot on the flex plate.
Regarding the starter, the same happened to my 1986 4.9L. It had 153,000 miles and the original starter. It progressively got worse and my favorite alternator/starter repair facility was closed [that would have been my first choice, since they do great work at very reasonable prices and I would have had the original part]. I went to O'Reilly's and purchased a lifetime warranty remanufactured one for $59.95. It took less than 30 minutes to replace and has performed well.
