Obnoxious starter!

I bought my first Ford earlier this month (an 85 F250 4.9 2wd).

The starter, which the previous owner yanked from a pickandpull, always had problems "unengaging" after the truck was started. It would make that grinding trying-to-start-an-already-running-engine noise for a few seconds after the engine fired up then it would go away.

I just got done installing a whole new flywheel / clutch / pressure plate... after hooking it all up the starter now grinds constantly.

It was so bad that it broke the existing bendix drive.

My questions (sorry for the long inro):
1) when I removed the starter there were 4 brass washers on each bolt holding the starter out from the bellhousing. I thought that Fords didn't need to be shimmed? Is this common??

2) how do I get the grinding to stop! I tried spacing it farther out but no luck.

Thanks!

As far as I know, the starter is supposed to be bolted up without any washers/shims under it.

As for the grinding, could it be a bad solenoid - they can, as they get older, arc closed and fail to release. They are pretty cheap, so it might be worth replacing it. However, there have been several threads on here with guys saying that their new solenoid was bad out of the box - cheap parts made with crappy materials in some third-world shop. I don't know how you get a good one.

The washers are a clue you might have the wrong starter for your truck.

Franklin... That's what I was jut starting to think too. After looking around some more I found out that the starter for an auto vs standard version of y truck will have a longer nose cone... probably what the last owner grabbed and why he shimmed it out.

I'll try getting a new one!

Stopped by autozone this morning to pick up a new starter. I could tell just by looking at it that the one I had was the wrong size. My old starter's "cone" was way too big.

Thanks for the help!
