The Diesel and 460 ZF5s are different bellhousing patterns as well as the small block ZF5s. The small block ZF5s; from what I heard, are weaker than the ZF5s for the diesel and 460.

Yes, the diesel and 460 units have a different bell housing bolt pattern than the 300. Beyond that the S5-42 ZF units are IDENTICAL. There were two options with the S5-42. Gear ratios (close and wide) and 2WD or 4WD tail-housings. The wide-ratio units have a 5.71:1 first gear while the close-ratio units have a 4.14:1 first gear. The 4WD tail-housing has the standard 6-bolt Ford t-case bolt pattern so the t-case from any Ford full-size will bolt to them. As I said, the 300 was available in the F-250 and F-350 and therefore a ZF that will work behind a 300, 302, or 351W is available. There is no such thing as a ZF5. The M5R2 (M5OD) Mazda-built 5-speed was the standard transmission OEM in the late-model Bronco and F-150 models (1/2-ton). It is an entirely different transmission, considerably weaker, but identical in length and mounting points to the S5-42 ZF from the heavier trucks. The clutch components are interchangeable as well.
wow thanks for the all the input and im sure the oil pressure gauge isnt 100% accurate but it deff seems to have some weird stuff going on ive been driving this thing for a couple months with "zero" oil pressure i figured if it died it would be a good excuse to replace it lol but again thanks for all the input i think im going to regear axles and change the sending unit and see what i get
I already-done-did like Greystreak said with the ZF from an F250 but I also
advanced the cam timing 4 degrees (really closer to 5 or maybe even 6...??
because of old wear) and get 12.6 mpg as an average with a ~150k 351w.
(no cat + straight through Walker/Thrush + 3.55 gears + 265/75-16E's)
It still can't pull from the bottom like my carbureted '75 360FE can but sure
as heck ain't as pipey* and next to worthless like it used to act before the
4 degree cam timing change.
If you aleady have the 5.0/302, the swap to 351W/ 5.8 is a direct bolt in project. As for your oil pressure, hook up a manual gauge and see what the pressure is actually doing. Duct tape it to the hood and go for a spin if you have to. Wiring is the hard part, you can use the 5.0 harness on the 5.8, You will also need the ECM to match the engine if it is a EFI.
I will be doing this swap as soon as i get everything found for it, 5.8,with ZFtrans and a NP205 X-case.
