Ok so I am buying a 2000 Expedition for a song and the owner told me that occasionally the starter will grind upon trying to start.
He says what he was told by the shop that put it in is that they put a shim on the starter when they installed and the shim either needs to be bigger or removed is this accurate?
For what it's worth, mine has done that 1-2 @ year for the last 10 years.
Starter, flywheel tooth missing, shim?
I don't know and every time it's done it the next try works.
Otherwise I'd look into a repair, still have the original starter at 166k miles.
Go figure...
Alright I will just have to pull the starter off and look I pray it is on the starter than the flywheel I have no desire to try and pull one out here is the flywheel is missing a tooth it will have to wait till I go home.
Shim? that makes no sense unless they new the flywheel was worn on one side and they were trying to move it out to grab the last remaining good teeth on the opposite side of the flywheel. But IMO it really just sounds like a bad starter. could be disengaging and spinning at the bottom instead of being fully engaged. that's what it sounds like to me
