I've added some Lucas to my Explorers tranny thats slipping and it has solved the slipping problem. I read the instruction and they mentioned to add the additive to any vehicle that tows, well I also own a 200 EB 4x4 Expo and have flushed the tranny about 7000 mls ago and nothing is wrong she pulls just fine. I pull approx 6000 lbs boat and trailer combo and wounder... should I use the Lucas as they say, add it for preventive maintenance? or just leave things be, like I stated the vehicle runs and pulls fine and she has around 82 k original mils. thanks
I also tow a 6000 TT 2-3 times a year, my XP has 166k with original trans.
With the correct maintenance intervals that trans should work properly for a long time.
However, when I had the last tranny service at my friend's shop he added BG Products additive to both my Fords.
He said since using that particular additive he has a lot of happy customers.
So I suppose, for an older vehicle, that's being used hard towing it might be a plus to include a premium additive to your trans service.
I did not notice any change in my XP, but did in my Mustang GT.
thanks for your reply. Love my Expo and want to keep her in good shape and working order...I tow probley 300-400 mls a yr and wanted to see if these additives were good for a trans or temporary wellnes and then degrade the performance of the trans. The Lucas has kept my trans in check in my explorer for close to 2 yrs now. I have added it twice so far. When I read the instructions I began to wonder, whats the stuff you use? thanks frank
That product is BG ATC Plus, available at shops only I think.
My XP trans has always felt right so I was not surprised when I didn't feel much of a difference.
Before this I'd had it serviced and flushed, this last time he just added it without telling me because of the miles on the truck (135k then).
When I picked it up he explained his positive experience with BG products. I'd never heard of BG prior to this.
In my automatic trans GT however, I did feel an improvement.
It was chirping rubber between shifts just like new.
I also use the lucas in my trans. Have always used it religiously in my fords for years. always with positive results. Made the trip from NY, NY to Detroit, michigan 10+ times over the mountains in my Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 hauling a 18ft double axle car trailer with a Evo VIII on the trailer. 166,000 Miles on the ranger and still no trans issues
yea transmissions are too expensive to replace, some preventive maintenance is a good thing. my 96 explorers on its 2nd trans and I'm babying it as long as I can before no# 3 goes in. I'm probably gonna use a different shop also.
