Good question. I was looking at that hammartone paint this weekend as well, and noted the 200 degree restriction as well. Does someone have one of those fancy infrared thermometer and can check the valvecover temps on a running engine? It would be interesting to see how warm different parts get.
I borrowed a high-quality laser-gun thermometer and took some temperature readings on my engine. Here they are.
After driving for 6 miles (home from work), outside temperature ~80 deg F, with engine running at idle in driveway. Pointer of stock temperature gauge pointing at the "O" in "NORMAL" (where it always points when my truck is warmed up). 1986 300 I6.
Valve Cover: 133 deg F
Upper radiator hose: 152 deg F
Lower radiator hose: 114 deg F
Engine block between 2 central spark plugs: 195 deg F
Oil filter: 184 deg F
Intake manifold: 192 deg F
Exhaust manifold: 505 deg F
Catalytic converter: 505 deg F
Then I turned engine off, let it "heat soak" for 5 minutes, and measured again:
Valve cover: 164 deg F
Upper radiator hose: 183 deg F
Engine block between 2 central spark plugs: 199 deg F
Exhaust manifold: 251 deg F
Hope this helps. I certainly found it interesting and fun to take these measurements. Someone please let me know if they see a problem with any temperature.
