well, after 49 long years of running around on what i assume is the original clutch(most of the recipts for repairs have been kept and dont see anything in regards to the clutch) mine has finally disappeard. and ive noticed that there are 2 different cluth sizes that ford has used, so ive been wondering what one i need? some one sugested that the flywheel is might be drilled already for both sizes. i would like to put the bigger 12'' clutch in mine if at all possible (i assume, more surface area=longer lasting and better)
If you got 49 years out of the one in there I wouldn't mess with that kind of success
i didnt get that many years out of it.. but all the records i have on modifications of the truck started in the late 70s, and i didnt see anything about a new clutch so, im only assuming.. it only lasted ME about a year of driving it.. (i havent put to many miles on it in the few years ive had it)
the biggest recorded repair, was a set of king pins, in 86. i was kind of suprised when i opened the glove box and found the original warrenty card.
I know someone who has installed the 12". It will fit, but you will have to drill the flywheel for it.
For your best chance at getting the right clutch the 1st time, try a place that specializes in clutches.
Also take a look at the other thread concerning clutch replacement.
There is a lot to determining just how well a clutch will hold. Everything else being equal, a larger one will hold more but if designed right, a smaller clutch can do better. Also consider the additional mass of a larger clutch. It may or may not be favorable.
