73 f250 cs, kept popping fuse for dash lights, found 2 wires melted together, appears to be a relay under the dash, one brown wire from headlight switch goes to this relay and then has 2 black wires one going to the left side of brake booster thru the dash other goes over column, then out threw fire wall to right side engine compartment, found wire stops at posative side of solenoid fusebile link melted, cut and replaced with balde fuse set up, also found left side of brake boosted red and "back" wire, red wire was unplugged, has power all the time, reconnected wire.
Now my question. the said relay does click when turning on headlights, repaired melted wiring, I did mix up the 2 back wires comming out of the back of relay, swaped aroundm system still works, any diagrams for said relay and wiring to correct if needed. What does the fusable link wire for at the hot side of solenoid for? What does the male-female plug red wire left of brake booster for???
Many Thanks in advanced for help-suggestions and directions
Go to 1973-1979 Ford Truck Wiring Diagrams & Schematics - FORDification.net . There you'll find the factory wiring diagrams for a '74 model (they're working on the '73 but don't have it yet). That is pretty much identical to the '73. You should be able to answer all your wiring questions.
Off the top of my head, I don't know of any such relay in the headlight circuit in stock form. If there is, then someone has likely added that on.
The fusible link coming off the starter solenoid connects the truck's entire electrical system to the main power distribution point (the battery side of the solenoid). It is designed to protect the heavy-gauge wiring coming in and out of the ignition switch. It does not protect lower-gauge wiring; that is the fuse panel's job.
Can you post a picture of the plug in question by the brake booster?
