Hello folks, I've found a 2001 7.3 Excursion with 150,000 miles. It looks great but I have not driven it yet. He claims all maintence has been done over the years..He is asking $12,000. We are buying it to tow a 6000lb trailer on a year long trip. We now use a 1999 expedition 5.4. My concern with the expy is pulling over the the Rocky mountains. Is the expy adequate. Certainly the excursion would do the job. Are there any inherent problems with the 7.3, or anything I should look for? Also is the price fair? There is no body damage and the interior looks great. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks Bob
Reasonably priced if it looks decent underneath as well. Check ball joints and tie rod ends as well as the shifting of the transmission. Is it 4x4? Hope so, then again, I'm biased
Not much salt there I don't believe..Check underneath for lots of rust. There is no way you will find a decent X, with a 7.3 and 4x4 for that around here. You do find them in the trader and CL, but they are not worth what they are asking for them when you look at them. Good luck. I've owned mine since it was brand spanking new, and loved every minute of it!
I agree that's a good price if it is really clean. Jack up the front wheels individually and rock them in and out with one hand at 12 o clock and one at 6. If there is any play it needs bearings or ball joints. Your Expedition might pull your trailer but it will be a totally different experience with a 7.3 EX
The first 6 months of the 2001 4r100 transmission production used a mechanical diode in the intermediate clutch instead of a sprag gear. It is a weak design which will eventually break. Ford realized that halfway through the production year and changed the design back to a sprag gear. Mine broke at around 140,000 miles. Requires removing and rebuilding or replacing the trans, Other than that it's a great truck.

Do you know what were the first six months build dates of the 2001 4r100? I assume it wasnt Jan. through June since they were building 2001 MY trucks in mid to late 2000?

I agree with you. The OP needs to look at that 7.3 X closely. All of the 7.3 X's that I've seen for that price were trashed. The owners of clean ones were asking alot more. Doesnt mean they got it but they were asking alot more.

Actually 9 months (trans built 7/2000 through 3/2001). If you have a 2002 you're OK. Here's a link to the TSB.
