Found what appears to be a decent 2001 7.3 with 183k miles. Had it checked out by a mechanic had a few seals leaking that need replacing and the door lock actuators need to be replaced as well. Managed to talk them down for needed work and plan on picking it up on Friday

In my 12 years of owning a 2wd Excursion, I've learned one VERY important thing: "Having 4wd is like having a gun, you'd much rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it"
There were simply too many times where I needed 4wd and wished I had it. No matter how you convince yourself that you don't need 4wd, there will be times you'll wish you had it. It's also like having a Swiss Army knife that does almost, but not quite, everything.
This is why when I bought my 2005 Excursion I made sure it had 4wd. I now have the Swiss Army knife of trucks and have been able to go and do things my 2wd Excursion could not. Almost all of the times I've had to use 4wd were impromptu situations where I never planned on using it, it was just nice to have and be able to say: "Yeah, I got this".
Yes, it's a little more to maintain but in the end it's worth not having to worry if your truck can handle something.
One good thing about having a 2wd is it's less likely to be stolen. If thieves are in an area targeting high end SUVs a 2wd is worth less so it will be passed over, consider it "extra insurance"! Also this is why mine is 2wd, not because I bought the first one I could find without looking for longer, simply I wanted the safety of knowing it would be safe in a parking lot
Thieves usually don't bother with Excursions because of the PATS. It takes time to bypass the PATS, this is why they go after crew cab, long bed, 4wd 1999-2007 Super Duties. No PATS to mess with, they throw a shell on the back, spray paint the windows, and go from there.
