CPS Teardown

I had a CPS removed from Josh's (JacksonJL) truck that would not show RPM when cranking on AE.

I decided to check it against a known good one today and the resistance was all over the place compared to the good one.

I decided to tear it apart so everyone could see how simple they really are. This one is thought to be a Borg Warner CPS.

So is the colored stuff on the solder connections rust? Other than that, the solder joints appear to be in good shape. Any idea what caused the crazy readings?

And what did you ohm the good one at and what did the bad one read?

I am guessing the magnetic pick-up in the end failed.

Chris,

The connections had some sort of dielectric grease or something. It all wiped off. There was also a black RTV like material around the magnet connections and in the middle body section.

Here is what I measured on them.

So possibly some sort of internal short to ground from the CMP signal pin? Is the magnet strength affected any?

Fascinating. I sent my BW back after 2.9 hours in the rig and reinstalled my old one (F7TZ-12K073-B). Yes, the BW did make for a smoother idle, but the shutting down thing when I turned the wipers on was a deal breaker. I've got one of the new International units on the way, as well as one of the "-C" units from Motorcraft. I'll report back after I've got a few miles on them regarding mpg, etc. Cheers.

The magnet seemed strong still. It may not be as strong as the OEM Black ones though. I know the gray one is not near as strong as the black ones.

So that's what the gremlins inside a CPS look like! Thanks for taking the time to share photos with us, as well as the resistance readings. I may go ahead and take some resistance readings on some of my spare CSPs now in order to compare with your ohm values.

My guess would be your internet browser is causing the problems. Which one are you using?

i don't know Ken, its my work comp. i'm far from comp. savy, but do love the stuff you put here. just discovered your web site yesterday, nice. only took me a year & a half.
between you, guzzle, RR, and a few others, i have 2, 3in. thick note books full of how to stuff. way easier to understsnd than manuals. pictures are a big help for me. i did things
i would never have tried without those pics. so keep it up, its great!

This whole thing still fascinates me. Why did portsample's BW CPS fail after a few hours and mine hasnt had a single blip yet...

If we can find out why the BW CPS fails perhaps we could find a fix, then we would have a great CPS that wont fail. No doubt the BW is better than the Grey, but its reputation is awful.

Was it Curtis that did his tests on the magnet by picking up different size washers to compare magnet strength? Sounds like a worthwhile test, especially if you can find a good BW part and compare them.

Probably the same reason some of the original Ford parts failed so quickly while others kept on for a couple hundred thousand miles. Whatever the reason, it's something we don't understand yet.
