T-stat change help

Ok I have my oil cooler rebuild kit, 4 gals of oil, 4 gals of fleet charge coolant, 24 gals of distilled water. So the plan is to drain the oil and coolant, take the oil cooler of and replace the gaskets and o-rings, then flush the coolant system. But i figured since im draining the coolant i should change the t-stat out since i think its sticking open. After some reading I should get a Ford t-stat correct? I've found a 203 t-stat at napa for my 95 but have read about o-ring problems IIRC? Any think im missing or should change out too while im in there?

Thats what i figured thanks Mike. Is the o-ring on the one from ford ok? Not to small or any of the other problems like the one from the parts store?

smokerblack will tell you all about it Blake, LOL!! Diesel site has a good T stat neck, better then our stock ones.

Blake you might want to get some allen head bolts for the housing. Much easier to reinstall. They are metric.

Haha nice Glenn. And is a new neck nessecary or is more just for insurance?

Thank Jose for posting this up some time back.

The bolts are: flange bolts M6 1.0 pitch and 20 mm long.

I would get a reinforcing ring for the t-stat housing. it will come with new bolts and a new o-ring.

So Trav thats just a reinforcment for the housing so you dont tweak anything and the o-ring gets even pressure?

Correct. It also replaces the stock square cut o-ring with a better o-ring.

Hmm i' ll have to see how bad the housing kneck is when i start all these projects and see if i need that and a new kneck. Im going to ford today to get a new t-stat and y-pipe gasket so i might see about a kneck. Im using your oil cooler write up to knock this thing out here in a couple days, that write up makes it sound a lot easier then i though it would be.

Once you get into it, you'll realize it's a fairly easy project. Getting the end caps off and back on the oil cooler is the worst part.
