I have a 72 Ford that I plan on supercharging, but I would like to know a little more about superchargers and what is needed. What exactly has to be done to a motor of that age to have a supercharger mounted and what style of supercharger is best for a 4x4 daily driver application?
A complete rebuild. A supercharger on an old 390.....? No turd could ever be polished enough to match that.
How much power do you want?
Easy, big power can be had out of a 390. Since you will be rebuilding it anyway, (before or shortly after adding the huffer) build a decent NA motor and forget the supercharger.
I would like to at least have around 450-500hp to the wheels. I want it to be reliable and able to run on pump gas though, thats why I'm leaning towards the supercharger.
Lots of options. A lot depends on what kind of budget you are working with. Are you capable and willing to do fabricating?
For the engine you'll want Forged dished pistons, Balanced rotating assembly, good quality rod bolts, Head studs, Good quality head gaskets ( preferably MLS type ) . And that doesn't even get into the cam, head work, etc.
You also have to decide on whether you want to go with a draw thru or blow thru set up.
As far as a supercharger goes I would stay away from the centrifugal and go with either an Eaton H122 off a Shelby GT500, A screw/whipple type, or a small roots. No matter which one you go with I don't think anyone offers a bolt on kit. So You'll have to fabricate all the mounts, brackets, idler pulleys, etc. Or pay someone else to make all the stuff.
In all reality a supercharger is cool. But on a 390 go with a good pair of aftermarket heads, cam and intake with some headers and you'll be very close to the numbers you are looking for. This is coming from a guy that plans to build a supercharged engine for a daily driver 4x4.
Yeah I wasn't sure what had to be done to the internal parts, but I had planned on going with a two screw supercharger. I have also been looking at aluminum heads, any thoughts on those? Do I need to look at replacing the crank or anything of the sort?
